Options vs. Stocks: Why I Trade Options Instead

After 35 years in the markets, here is why I trade options instead of stocks: defined risk, less capital tied up, and more ways to be right.

Watch: Why Trade Options Instead of Stocks, from Bill's YouTube channel.

New traders start with stocks. Buy a share, hope it rises, sell it later. Stocks feel safer because they are familiar. I spent 35 years in banking and the markets, and I trade options instead. Once you see why, plain stock trading looks different.

The video above walks through the full comparison on real charts. Here is the written version.

The core difference

Buy a stock and you pay full price for every dollar of exposure. A position in a $200 stock costs $20,000 for 100 shares. Every dollar of that is at risk if the stock falls.

An option is a contract on that same stock. It gives you the right to buy or sell at a set price before a set date. You take on no obligation. One contract controls 100 shares for a fraction of what the shares cost. That difference drives everything else.

Why I choose options

1. Defined risk

When I buy an option, the most I can lose is what I paid for the contract. I know my worst case before I enter the trade. A stock can gap down through any stop-loss you set. A long option caps the loss at the premium. For a rules-based trader, that certainty is worth a lot.

2. Less capital doing more work

One contract controls 100 shares, so I can express the same idea with less money tied up. Position sizing still rules everything. But my capital stays free while ten other setups develop, instead of sitting locked in one name.

3. More ways to be right

Stock traders profit only when price moves their direction. Options let you build trades for a move up, a move down, or a stock that goes nowhere. Selling premium in a sideways market is a strategy stock-only traders do not have.

4. Income strategies

Covered calls and cash-secured puts pay you premium on positions you already hold or want to hold. They put a long-term portfolio to work in a practical way.

The honest trade-offs

Options carry real risk, and I teach them with the risks up front:

  • Time decay. Every option loses value as expiration approaches. Buy an option, watch the stock go nowhere, and you can still lose. The clock is part of the trade.
  • Complexity. Strikes, expirations, spreads, the Greeks. The learning curve is real. Trading options without understanding them is how accounts get hurt.
  • Leverage cuts both ways. The same math that grows gains grows percentage losses. Sizing and discipline matter even more with options.

That is why I trade a system with defined setups, defined risk, and rules I never negotiate with. I teach the same system step by step in my free options webinar.

Reading about it is one thing. Seeing it on charts is another. In the video I show the numbers side by side: the same trade in shares and in contracts, and what happens in each scenario.
